Swedish massage utilizes long, flowing strokes to ease tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. This classic form of massage therapy is ideal for rest and relaxation. While Swedish massage can be quite gentle, it can also incorporate deep tissue massage techniques. I often use this modality as a foundation for most table massage sessions, including trigger point therapy.

Trigger points are mini spots of inflammation in your muscles, often associated with referred pain. For instance, when you receive a deep tissue massage, pressing on top of your shoulder may cause a sensation in your head, or applying pressure below your knee might be felt in your ankle. Trigger point therapy is a focused method within massage therapy that seeks out these trigger points to ultimately relieve tension. This work requires a lot of deep breathing and is not for the faint of heart, much like a Swedish massage can be both relaxing and intense.

Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve chronic muscle tension and improve mobility. Various modalities can serve as the foundation for this deep tissue massage technique. A range of methods, including Swedish massage and trigger point therapy, can be employed to penetrate deeply into the muscle tissue and effectively target problem areas.

Myofascial work can be approached in a couple of different ways, often complementing techniques like deep tissue massage or Swedish massage. Typically, this work is on the slower side and focuses on the superficial layer of fascia that covers the entire body. Think of what happens when you tug at one part of a t-shirt—how another part of the t-shirt gets pulled along with it. This myofascial technique aims to 'iron out' the superficial fascia, much like trigger point therapy helps release tension in deeper muscle layers.
